Austin Statesman 10K

Jackson, Chloe and I signed up for the Statesman 10K in April of 2024. We hardly trained until the weather warmed up in the spring. Chloe and I remotely encouraged each other to get at least one run in each week in March.

A few weeks later, my toe started hurting. After I took off the nail polish used to cover up the bruises from the last ski trip, it was clear that my toe nail had broken in half from running. The new nail growth pressed on the nerve and I was in constant pain - just in the week leading to the race. Meanwhile, Will was swamped with work and we debated about cancelling the trip.

Despite everything, we left on Saturday morning. The three-hour drive went smoothly. After having lunch at Chloe and Bruno's, we went to play tennis during Emma's tennis lesson. Four kids loved playing in the fields near the tennis courts.

Before meeting the Terrazas for dinner, we checked out the trail near their neighborhood and the community chicken coop. It's spring and we found eggs outside of the wired coop. Dinner was at Easy Tiger on South Lamar. Their patio was nice, although it was too chilly to sit outside.

I decided to go run. Sunday we woke up early and Will dropped us off near the Congress bridge. With 25,000 runners, the energy was so electric - bands were playing along the route and we ran together since J tripped earlier in the run. It was a great feeling crossing the finish line and receiving the heavy medal. We saw a guy with a big trophy and asked him what's his time -- 32 minutes! We did it for around 68 minutes.

We drove home after lunch, just in time for Jackson's scout meeting. It was a great short trip and we will do it again.
